This Disease Is More Dangerous Than Coronavirus

In the name of God, the Most Merciful, and may prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of God.
My brothers and sisters, peace be upon you and God’s mercy and blessings.

In our contemporary world, while people live under the pressure of epidemics and widespread diseases chief among them the COVID-19 virus many overlook a far more dangerous and pervasive disease that spreads silently and strikes society without people realizing its true magnitude or reality. It is a contagious disease whose danger and impact are many times greater than the well-known pandemic. It has destroyed families, shaken the stability of communities, and left deep scars on individuals without receiving the attention it deserves.

This disease is anxiety and stress.

Some may think that anxiety and stress are merely temporary psychological states, but the truth is that they represent symptoms of a real mental illness that has begun to spread throughout communities everywhere. It does not spread as viruses and bacteria do through the air or physical contact. Rather, it spreads in another manner that is far more hidden and far more powerful: through behavior, emotions, and daily reactions.

A person suffering from anxiety and stress reflects this condition in their conduct: irritability, constant tension, anger, lack of sleep, and emotional instability. These behaviors do not stay confined to the individual but directly affect those around them, especially within the family environment. The home is the first space where a person interacts and influences others. If either parent is afflicted by constant anxiety and tension, this inevitably affects the children and spouse, transferring these emotional patterns to them until the whole family becomes psychologically affected.

This manifests in various ways such as unreasonable fear, rapid anger, obsessive thoughts, persistent negativity, and sometimes depression. Each person may show symptoms differently, but the underlying cause is the same: chronic anxiety and stress.

From medical experience, it is evident that around 80% of today’s clinical cases are psychological in nature, even though the complaints may initially appear physical. Many patients ask after noticing the repetition of symptoms within the same household:
"Is this disease hereditary?"

The answer is clear: it is not hereditary it is behaviorally and emotionally contagious. Transmission occurs through daily interaction and emotional influence between family members, especially between parents and children. When parents consistently display anxious and tense behaviors, children inevitably acquire the same attitudes and emotional patterns, eventually developing the same psychological disorder.

For this reason, this disease is more dangerous than many known epidemics. It spreads quietly, without warning, striking emotional stability and social cohesion. Its psychological and social impact is far greater and more long-lasting than most physical illnesses.

What worsens the situation is the widespread misconceptions surrounding mental illness. Many people believe that seeking psychological treatment means madness or the use of medications that cause hallucinations or addiction. This misunderstanding drives many sufferers toward superstition, charlatans, and unscientific treatments, trapping them in an endless cycle without healing.

In an age marked by increasing psychological pressure due to health crises, economic hardship, and the constant flow of frightening images and alarming news on social media, both adults and children have become vulnerable to fear and persistent anxiety. Today, society stands at the brink of a widespread mental-health crisis.

anxiety and stress are genuine mental illnesses that spread behaviorally and emotionally, threatening family stability and social well-being more severely than many physical diseases. Awareness, breaking the stigma of psychological treatment, and seeking professional medical help are the true paths toward recovery and prevention.

In closing
the noble saying of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) remains a guiding truth:
“Allah did not send down a disease without sending down its cure. Some know it, and others do not.”

Healing exists, treatment is available, and recovery is possible when the correct steps are taken.

Peace be upon you and God’s mercy and blessings.
